Sunday look

8 Jun

ah haa! The sun came out to play.. and what a day it was. We spent a lovely Sunday in a small park, walking a happy dog, with a happier toddler (and very happy ma just after an iced coffee!!).

After my orange lip post I really fancied a bright look to go with the summery clothes and general vibe of the day. So along with my high shine gold ‘jesus shoes’, I slicked on a coat of Revlon matt Colourburst balm in Audacious.

I didn’t want a shouting lip, just one bright enough to feel summery today. So, i put the colour in the centre of my lips and used my finger to blend it. This makes a softer, slightly more natural finish. Less of a precise edge. The dog and toddler loved it!!!!

You can make the look far far more dramatic with a couple of coats. But not what I was after today.

FYI this is my Kiehls base I wrote about before. still love love loving it!

Everyone’s talking about orange lips!

3 Jun

I saw it! I even sat in it. There was sun! Corals and bright colours all came out to play. Briefly, it was awesome.

Magazines, beauty editors and makeup artists, including my very very favourite and general hero Lisa Eldridge, have all been talking about this season’s lip colour – orange. Scary stuff? The thing with orange is it’s loud. Shocking and loud! However there are different ways of wearing it, lipstick, gloss, stain for example, helping make it more wearable it pure tangerine ain’t your thang…

my very favourite (currently, although for a few weeks already) is Bourjois Colour Boost lip pencil, ‘Peach on the Beach’

Great colour, so flattering, lip stain come glossy finish, all wrapped up in a pencil package!

Run, skip, saunter, but whatever you do, join the orange lips fan club!

anyone got any other fav shades we should know about?

Watch out Kiehls, you have a super fan!

21 May

Ta da! It’s May. The middle of May at that. Spring has nearly sprung, the summer is coming. And this weather! Dry and sunny……. Sun cream and SPF obsession begins afresh for another year.

I went to bluewater yesterday and called into Kiehls. I was sort of killing time, sort of finding a product for a certain man in my life and sort of bothering the girl in there for more information on the brand. What an experience! The girl/lady was so knowledgable and helpful (not so easy to find in all honestly, you have to pick your brands carefully!). And Kiehls had such a wonderful playground of products. I have no doubt that there are some stalwart fans amongst you. I am now with you.

The one, perfect, wonderful product I want to shout about today is the BB cream, ‘actively correcting and beautifying’ BB cream to be exact.

It has SPF 50. Sold.

Others might need a little more convincing (although you shouldn’t, SPF 50 is basically unheard of!). I was slightly concerned that the sun factor was going to mean a thick, unmanageable texture that didn’t work with other makeup. No no no. This wonder BB cream smooths on and settles perfectly. You can’t feel it on your skin, it’s almost powdery, but not quite. My skin’s tone was even and beautiful in an instant. There was a beautiful dewy quality and as even as you could ever wish for..

It did not budge all day!

Love love love love love.

I was also impressed with the colour range on offer. I’ve written about BB creams before. I bought natural, as fair was just too light. Great! This means super fair skins are catered for.

So folks. I have got a few samples to try, but what do you love? What do you recommend?

My favourite makeup (at the moment!!)

11 Apr

Goodness me, could it very nearly, almost, just maybe be Spring??!

Well, whether it is or not, I’m determined to feel like it’s happened! Not easy to achieve however. Currently I’m working with bright lip colours to do it for me. Ordinarily I wouldn’t mind reapplying lipstick, but it doesn’t seem quite right to leave fuscia lip marks all over the baby ;0) I’ve been using some lip stains as a result. Great results I can report!

Revlon have had their ‘Just Bitten’ range for a little while now. I love them! They really do stay in place and stain your lips beautifully. The balm is good too, and to be honest, needed to make your lips look irresistibly kissable (paramount to the baby! ha!). So quick to apply and it makes such a statement look. RESULT! I’m loving ‘Passion’. More to the point, if Jessica Biel is advertising it, I’ll try and buy it!!

Next to try is the new balm stain Revlon have brought out…

Rimmel have their version too, ‘1000 Kisses’. Almost identical, same results, same, same, same.. ‘Endless Blossom’ is a softer look than the Revlon one mentioned. I’ve always thought this Rimmel colour is a good shout for brides, maybe with a little gloss over the top depending on the finish you’re after.

With my lips stained, I just need to have a little definition on my eyes. I generally champion Bourjois ‘Volume Clubbin’ mascara. I have another gem for you, ‘Liner Effect’!

Product Image

This mascara is more about defining individual lashes and creating lovely fanned lashes, rather than general volume. Whilst it’s quite a natural looking finish, you can build it up to make quite a dramatic look. Overall I think I still prefer Volume Clubbin, but this is a really good second place!

Eyes and lips done, onto the base (I wouldn’t necessarily apply makeup in this order). I have a new favourite BB cream. I’ve blogged about this before, but I think it’s tricky finding a BB cream for pale skin tones. Previously I was using the Maybelline BB cream, which I still like and may well go back to. Now I’ve got the Revlon version. Love, love, love! It still has spf 30 which I love, and it has a lovely finish, not too shiny (which can be a tad dodgy when it gets warm!!) and really good coverage. This is one I think you’ll all like :0) Grab one and give it a go…

On the topic of BB creams, I had a look at the Kiehls offering. In my (humble) opinion the fact that it has spf 50 made it smell like sun cream. It also had a fairly matt finish. So, for me, not the one. Have you tried it? What did you reckon?

Finally, a little blush. Nars ‘Multiple’ in ‘Orgasm’ is fab. That’s all!

So, the million dollar question……… What are your fave makeup bits? What else do I need to try?!!

Mother’s Day

7 Mar

It’s March! Mother’s Day is just around the corner, not even a corner really as it’s on Sunday, more like at the end of a short, straight path…

So, I thought it might be nice that I gave a few short pointers about makeup and styling for the more mature face and skin?!? You can pass it on to your Mummies, or direct them to my blog if they’re up to speed like mine :0)

In essence makeup is makeup, and the general rules apply.. Wait for it.. Yup, here it is, my chat about CONCEALER, AGAIN! Use it, use it, use it. Don’t assume foundation will do the job, it doesn’t (it does a different job very well!). Use a concealer that is creamy and just a touch lighter than your skin tone. DO NOT do very pale concealer. It looks stupid, not natural and just stands out in the wrong way! Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer is fantastic. There are so many shades that one will certainly cover those dark circles, in itself taking a good few years off. If you want something lighter, look for a pen style concealer. BE WARY of highlighter pens such as Touche Eclat. Again, they have their place, but in my opinion not layered under the eye (see note above about unnatural and pale concealer!). Clinique and MAC offer some lighter liquid concealers worth a look.

A cream blush will shave years off. As we get older our skin gets drier. Any powder should be used sparingly. Nars and MAC have some great blushes that help give a wonderful glow to the skin. Nars ‘Orgasm’ multiple stick is a cult fave and for good reason! It is quite shimmery, so don’t go overboard, and just to the apples of your cheeks. Imagine you’ve just  dashed up a flight of stairs. That’s where the colour should go..

Eye liner. Use a good pencil or gel liner next to the top lashes. Pencil is fairly simple, do short strokes along the lash line until you have  continuous line. You can either leave it like that, or smudge it slightly for a softer look. Be careful when smudging not to get too enthusiastic, or it will end up more like eye shadow than liner! Gel liners are fab as they are waterproof and tend to last longer therefore. Use a good eye liner brush. Place your elbow on a hard surface, like a dressing table, and then use your other hand to GENTLY hold your eye brow up slightly. This will mean that you can get right into the lashes and get a perfect line without there being a gap between lid and line. Try doing short strokes and joining them up again, rather than one long continuous line which is seriously hard. The pleasure when using gel liner is that you can get away without doing a long line, so the end result looks far better! Bobbi Brown, MAC, KIKO, L’Oreal all do gel liners. I love them, and so will you soon :0)

Avoid liner under your eye. You will look tired and you don’t want that! If you’ve been used to wearing heavier under eye makeup, trust me, you will defo look younger once you stop! I appreciate a change of look takes some time to get used to, but you’re worth it ;0) Try some soft, matt, light grey, taupe or bronze shadow at the outer corner under your eye. It will be such an improvement on liner. Follow this with a volumising mascara. Black will help define your eyes.

Go for a brighter shade of pink on your lips, something a shade or two brighter than your natural colour. Your eyes will look more sparkly and your skin more alive. Bonus! Try a little lip liner before your lipstick, in a very soft, natural shade. Our lips get thinner as we get older and we start to look older for it. A natural lip liner, such as MAC ‘Sub Culture’ is perfect. Follow the line of your lip, not outside it. Then fill it in and go all over your lip with the liner. This will also help keep the lipstick in place. Again, creamy textures are far more forgiving and flattering than matt. In fact, avoid matt textures like the plague ;0)!! Bobbi Brown’s Creamy lip colour is a great texture, and ‘Nectar’ and ‘Pink Blossom’ are a very pretty shades! KIKO also have some pretty colours..

 519 Baby Pink

This is ‘Luscious Cream – Creamy Lipstick’ in ‘Baby Pink’ by KIKO. Bright, but still natural.

Well, I hope this is interesting to y’all and your lovely Mums!!! Get in touch and let me know what they think…..

Happy Mother’s Day

Brand alert…

17 Jan

Brrr! Just a tad chilly at the mo, eh?!

Well, if you’re looking for indoor activities this weekend and fancy a spot of shopping, why not spend some time wandering about the beauty halls somewhere? Just me…?!

I was pottering about one such place recently and came across a new brand I hadn’t seen…. ‘Wild About Beauty’. This is a brand brought out by Louise Redknapp and her makeup artist Kim Jacob. They have an ethos that I completely agree with – not overloading the skin with makeup, natural looking finish and natural ingredients.

Taken from their site wildaboutbeauty.com

“Without over-complicating beauty; we offer a core collection of easy to use, paraben free, make-up essentials. Our products are packed with nourishing, beneficial ingredients including Winter Cherry Extract, German Chamomile and Organic Rose Water that work in harmony to enrich and care for your skin.”

Honestly, I’m not crazy on the name, or the packaging, but it’s what’s inside that counts (ha! funny coming from a makeup artist!).

I tried out the concealer (obviously, as I’m obsessed!). It is creamy and goes on nicely. I walked about the store and looked in plenty of mirrors, and yes, it covered my dark circles! It comes in a little pot with two shades, so you can mix and perfectly match the shade to your skin. They don’t have a lot of pot combos, but there are probably enough to suit most people.

I was given a couple of samples of serums

Rose Water Illuminating Serum

Rose Water illuminating serum

Botanical Skin Prep

The Rose Water serum has a nice light texture that you can use on its own, or under makeup. Nice!

I also poked my fingers into the eye shadows and cheek colours. All lovely textures. The shadows are very flattering colours, and come in powder and cream. The blush comes in powder, cream and cream to powder (clue in the name, goes on like a cream and develops into a powder finish).

You’re going to love the brand if you like soft, natural beauty. All very interesting and really worth a look ladies :0)

Have you tried any of their products? Write a post and let me know!

Speedy polished makeup

8 Jan

Happy New Year folks!

2013 is upon us and the January blues are a now a reality.. Sad but true that every year January feels like a major let down. Grey, murky weather is a massive contributor to this, no?? So, what’s the answer? Well, clearly the classics like new challenges and goals would be a sensible starting place? However, a new set of togs from the sales is far more exciting! Having an 11 week old makes shopping slightly trickier. Having said that, having an 11 week old opens up a huge world of new shopping opportunities ;0)

Thinking about making changes and new looks ties in quite nicely with the ‘New Year, New You’ idea I think. One of my dearest friends (another Mummy as it goes) asked me recently how she could look ‘more polished’ (her words, not mine – I can honestly say she always looks great!). However, she also wanted to know how to look more polished, and it not take 1/2 hr to achieve.. A January challenge!

As a new Mum I totally appreciate time being of the essence, even more so if you have a limited interest in makeup to begin with (I’ve heard these people exist ;0) )! I think the idea of looking polished involves a few things;

1) Not looking tired

2) Not looking tired

3) Having glowing, even skin

4) Slightly flushed, healthy looking skin/cheeks

5) Defined features, specifically your eyes

6) Using products that stay in place all day, stopping the need for any touch ups

Right. How do we get this amazingly easy finish? Skin care is vital. It means you make sure the canvas for your makeup is in tip top condition. Make sure you moisturise morning and night, and I mean face AND eyes! Also, make sure you carefully and thoroughly remove all traces of makeup from face and eyes EVERY night.

The ‘not looking tired’ is so simple. I’ve championed the product before….. CONCEALER!! Run, sprint, race and elbow your way to Bobbi Brown and buy your creamy concealer (and corrector if you have dark circles like mine!). They will help you buy the perfect shade so you can trust it every morning. As a side point, I haven’t worked with or even met a scary/rude Bobbi Brown artist yet, they’ll be helpful and in no way intimidating.

Glowing skin is also a pretty easy one to achieve. Use a tinted moisturiser or BB cream. Choose one with an spf so you know you’re protecting your skin at the same time as making the tone more even. You can use fingers to dab on the product and then gently sweep it around your face into place (obviously you can use a brush, but this is the quick method!).

Cheeks. So easy! Cream blush. I say cream as it helps add to the dewy, glowing skin thing.. Dab onto the apples of your cheeks. Done. The cream below is MAC, and the colour ‘Something Special’ is a lovely pretty peach pink – just the ticket :0)

 Cremeblend Blush

Now, eyes. Use a log wear cream shadow that lasts. Bobbi Brown, MAC, Kiko (see below) and L’Oreal all offer shadows that stick to your lid all day. Use a brush (flat head, not with fluffy bristles) to apply the shadow (perhaps a light or mid brown, light grey/silver, or gold for a day to day look) from lashes to the crease of your eye (go ever so slightly above the crease and blend gently with your finger).

Long Lasting Stick Eyeshadow

Then use a dark pencil, (brown, grey or black will suit most people, but if you want some colour, navy, purple and green are great options) on the top lash line. Have a read of my previous posts and you can see why putting liner under your eye can act against points 1 and 2!! Now, you can leave a stronger line, or you can smudge your pencil liner for a softer look – a 2 second act! Mascara all round, top and bottom lashes, and please, don’t let it stay clumpy and ugly. Use the brush to sweep through your lashes until each is defined. Much, much nicer. You could also use a light touch of powder on your T zone, but this is adding a step…

To keep your makeup looking polished ALL day you can use primer under your BB cream/tinted moisturiser/foundation. OR quicker again, choose a moisturiser that has one in it, try Bobbi Brown or MAC. Clever!

Vitamin Enriched Face Base

I can hand on heart promise that these steps should take no more than 10 mins to do, and with a bit of pressure like a screaming baby I reckon you can whittle that down to 8 mins ;0)

If you want a total makeup, then define your eye brows and add a little lip colour.

Let me know if you want any other pointers, or how fast you can get the job done!
